Sailing Courses

We organise a a wide variety of courses throughout the year. These range from our 3 hour Feel the Wind sessions for beginners to our 5 day Set Sail courses for those who want to go further afield.

Give it a go

A fun introduction to the thrills & spills of sailing.

  • Length: 3 hours
  • Previous Experience: No previous experience or knowledge is required or assumed.
  • Syllabus: Basic controls, Stopping, Tacking
  • Certificate: ISA Taste of Sailing Certificate.

Feel the Wind

The perfect course to experience the exciement of sailing and learn some of the basic manoeuvres.

  • Length: 1 day.
  • Previous Experience: No previous experience or knowledge is required or assumed.
  • Syllabus: Basic controls, Stopping, Tacking, Rigging, Ropework
  • Certificate: ISA Taste of Sailing Certificate.

Learn the Ropes

A foundation course for those new to sailing, building a solid skills base quickly, enabling you to enjoy sailing and gain confidence.

  • Length: 2 days
  • Previous Experience: No previous experience or knowledge is required or assumed.
  • Syllabus: Basic controls, Stopping, Tacking, Gybing, Weather, Rules, Sailing upwind & downwind, Rigging, Ropework
  • Certificate: ISA Start Sailing Certificate (on successful completion).

Steady as she goes

A development course designed to sharpen basic skills and improve competency and enjoyment on the water before heading onto the more advanced.

  • Length: 5 days or 2 weekends
  • Previous Experience: Learn the ropes or equivalent.
  • Syllabus: Points of Sailing, 5 essentials: Coming alongside, Man over board, How a sail works, Weather, Sailing in company
  • Certificate: ISA Basic Skills Sailing Certificate (on successful completion).

2 sails good, 3 sails better

Experience the excitement of high-performance sailing and the use of asymmetric spinnakers. This course is a natural progression from the Steady as Goes course enabling you to further refine boat handling skills and confidence to realise your full potential as a sailor.

  • Length: 5 days or 2 weekends
  • Previous Experience: Steady as she goes
  • Syllabus: Asymmetric spinnakers, Reefing, Racing, Day Sailing, Launching, Towing
  • Certificate: ISA Improving Skills Certificate (on successful completion).

Ready to Race

This course provides you with an introduction to what’s involved in racing at your local club.

  • Length: 5 days or 2 weekends
  • Previous Experience: 2 sails good, 3 sails better or equivalent
  • Syllabus: Pre race prep, Roll tack, Roll gybe, Boat tuning, Race stategy, Startring, Tactics, Rules, Compass work, Weather
  • Certificate: Introduction to Racing Skills Certificate (on successful completion).

Set Sail

The Set sail is the ideal course for those wanting to take their boats further afield. A chance to learn a fun,confident and safe approach to planning and executing short cruises in open boats, while building self reliance and decision making skills at sea.

  • Length: 5 days or 2 weekends
  • Previous Experience: 2 sails good, 3 sails better or equivalent
  • Syllabus: Sailing Backwards, Sailing without a rudder, Rig tuning, Navagation, Tides
  • Certificate: ISA Advanced Sailing Skills Certificate (on successful completion).

Powerboat Courses

We offer a variety of powerboat courses, including Inland Waterways motorboat training, as well as shorebased courses.

Powerboating:

Powerboating is one of the easiest ways to get on the water today. Maybe you just want to spend a sunny summer’s day out with the family and friends, skiing, fishing or just relaxing. Or perhaps you’re as commercial user who needs qualifications for work. Here at the Irish Sailing Academy we provide a comprehensive range of the Irish Sailing Association powerboat courses for those certificates which are both nationally and internationally recognised and our own in house powerboat clinics for thios4e of you that want to learn how to get your boat into and out of that tricky space in the marina and see how the professionals make it look so easy.

Courses:

Introduction to Powerboating (1 Day): If you’re new to boating this is the course to start you off.

National Powerboat Certificate (2 Day): Learn to skipper your powerboat safely and make sure everyone has a good day out. This course is also recognised by many insurers and will allow you get an international powerboat qualification.

Intermediate powerboat course (1 Day): Have a bit of experience but want to get to grips with short day passages and your electronics; this is the course for you.

Advanced Powerboat Certificate (2 Day): Take your boat further afield, enjoy longer coastal passages and experience navigating at driving at night and heavy weather handling.

Inland Waterways Motorboat Training:

The Irish inland waterways offer a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Learn how to navigate and skipper your boat to get the most out of one of Ireland’s best kept secret holiday destinations.

Courses:

Crew’s certificate (1 Day): If you’re new to boating this is the course to start you off

Skipper’s certificate (2 Day): Look like you’ve been boating for years when you take control of the boat to explore the beauty of our waterways in safety. Learn the tricks the pro’s use! This course is also recognised by many insurers and can lead onto an international boat license.

Shorebased courses:

With electronic navigational aids becoming more and more popular on boats these days you need to make sure you know their limitations and how to use them properly. You should also know how to get yourself and your crew back to safety if for some reason they fail. Join in one of our shorebased courses and find your way round your new bit of kit.

Courses:

Coastal Navigation for small boats (2 Days): Find out what GPS will and more importantly won’t do for you and you’re boat. Also get familiar with traditional navigation techniques so you won’t have to worry if the electronics fail.

VHF (1 Day): This course covers both traditional voice procedures as well as the newer DSC procedures
